ATC DERBY

A lot of racing people have a very fixed calender each year around where they will be.  The first week of November who would be anywhere else but Flemington and more recently early January brings everyone together on the Gold Coast.  This weekend sees one of racings oldest pilgrimages.  Easter Saturday and Randwick.  For over a century the Australasian racing world has flocked to Royal Randwick on Easter Saturday for the running of the AJC Derby and the Doncaster Hcp.   It really is a special day at a very special racecourse.
The AJC Derby has an honour roll unequalled in Australian racing.  Phar Lap, Tulloch, Dulcify and Kingston Town to name just a few legends who have won it.  It is the defining race for 3yo’s in Australia.  2011 marked the 150th running of the Derby and we had our filly Shamrocker lining up as one of the favourites.  Shamrocker had already given us a big thrill a few weeks earlier in the Australian Guineas but that was always just a stepping stone to her main target on Derby Day.  Glen Boss gave her a great ride and to watch her sweep to the lead inside the last 200 for a soft win was an amazing feeling.  You really feel the sense of history with a race like the Derby and to be involved with the winner of the 150th running is something I will never forget!
Royal Randwick has had a major facelift in the last few years with a world class grandstand and parade ring being built.  They will ensure you have a great day at the races. There is no better day than Easter Saturday and the running of the AJC Derby to check them out.
