You know how it is: work piles up, deadlines loom near, and the million and one other responsibilities you have just won’t let up. Toss young children into the mix and you may as well consider sleep a thing of the past. It’s a common phenomenon, which is why the hunt for the best eye cream for dark circles is a bit of a holy grail.
Before we dive into that, though, let’s take a look at why we get dark undereye circles in the first place. It’s not just the lack of sleep, although it’s the culprit most complain about.
Raccoon eyes can also be a product of allergies: the skin under your peepers is extra thin and very delicate, which is why it easily bruises when you rub it. When you get a bruise, your blood vessels essentially rupture, and blood spills into the surrounding area.
This thinness also makes the area prone to hyperpigmentation — another reason to limit your skin’s direct exposure to the sun.
Last but not the least, puffy eye bags can cast shadows, making the area underneath your eyes look darker than it really is.
Because there are several different factors that cause the problem, you can now see that there is no single best eye cream for dark circles. Rather, you should choose a product that best solves your unique issue. Here are a few to consider:
RoC Retinol Correction Eye Cream. More than once, we’ve championed the benefits of retinol for the skin. It encourages the production and turnover of skin cells, resulting in chronically fresh and youthful skin. Turns out it’s good for the eyes, too!
The cell turnover mechanism also encourages the production of collagen, making the undereye area thicker so the blood vessels don’t show up as much. Retinol also fades pigmentation (another reason that it’s a favourite with acne treatments), undoing the effects of too much time under the sun.
Bonus: retinol also smoothes wrinkles.
La Prairie Cellular Eye Essence Platinum Rare. The peptides combined with platinum mainly work to lift and firm the entire eye area. This reduces the shadows cast by sunken undereye skin. The essence also addresses discolourations to help brighten the area.
I’m loving the ball tip applicator — if applied cold, it helps reduce puffiness also. You may now take those spoons out of your freezer.
MAC Lightful C Vibrancy Eye Cream. On top of the usual blend of antioxidants, this cream contains caffeine, which reduces puffiness. It’s also got anti-irritants to help keep your paws away from your face. Sodium hyaluronate helps plump and thicken the skin to reduce the visibility of the blood vessels underneath.
Lastly, the subtle luminescent finish reflects light which artificially brightens the area.
The best eye cream for dark circles isn’t the most expensive or has the most impressive list of ingredients — the best is whatever works for you. It may take a while to find, but you’ll agree that it’s worth it if it means waking up looking refreshed and having to use less concealer.
As always, prevention is better than cure. If your dark circles are caused by allergies, try taking antihistamines. They also have the bonus effect of making you drowsy, ensuring enough sleep during the night. Stay out of the sun, use sunscreen, and hydrate.
