FLEMINGTON SPRING CARNIVAL WRAP UP

Once again race goers filled the famous Flemington lawns despite the unpredictable Melbourne weather.   Flemington Spring Carnival week is the pinnacle of Australian Racing.  Horses are in preparation for months with the aim of running during Cup week.

Who could have possibly predicted Prince of Penzance, a $101 chance to win the Melbourne Cup with Michelle Payne on board.  This put a smile on many peoples’ faces even though they may have lost on the punt.  And what a great story it was.  Brother and Sister sharing in the glory of The Melbourne Cup.  9th and 10th child in a family of 10, one a strapper and the other a jockey.  Michelle Payne, the first female jockey to ever win The Melbourne Cup and Stevie, the man with the biggest smile in racing!!

Now let’s not forget the thousands of race goers who braved Melbourne’s elements in effort to display their finest attire.  Derby Day displayed a traditional sea of monochrome and with each race day the outfits got brighter.  On Cup Day Jennifer Hawkins turned heads in a stunning neon creation by Maticevski.  Millinery was a strong point, from birdcage veils to boater hats, and my leather daisies made by Jill Humphries were a clear standout.

And so the Melbourne Spring Racing Carnival wraps up for another year.  No doubt next year will again be bigger and better.  Let’s just hope the weather Gods are on our side.

In the meantime, it’s still business as usual for those who work in the thoroughbred industry.  Horses race every day except Good Friday and Christmas Day.  Prize money may not be as high but none the less as much hard work and effort is put in by all!
