They say not to look a gift horse in the mouth — and I completely agree, especially if that gift is a race horse! I always knew that Danny, my husband, wasn’t exactly the most inventive present-giver. He says every wife should write a list of things she wants and give it to her husband so he can slowly cross items off on birthdays, anniversaries, christmas etc… We’ll chalk that up to him being romantic in his own way.
Traditionally on their wedding day, a bride and groom give each other wedding gifts, right? Over the years, my friends have told me about how, as brides, their husbands-to-be gave them a piece of jewellery. I guess ours was not a traditional wedding, so it was only fitting that neither was the wedding gift. I got a horse as a wedding gift from my husband!
I named him Lopov. He was a very tough gelding who won four races for me including wins at Caulfield and Moonee Valley. After he won at Caulfield over 2400m as a 3yo, I had grand plans to run him in the Caulfield Cup later that year. Danny thought that might be a bit beyond him, so I sold him to Perth where he proved me half right. He did win a big Cup… the Kalgoorlie Cup.
As much as I love dressing up and going to the races, there is nothing quite like watching your own horse race and particularly win!!! I had a lot of fun with Lopov but my next horse gave me an even bigger thrill.
The next horse (my birthday present) was a replacement for Lopov and she was a filly Danny bred. He had trained the sire (father) Purrealist and the dam (mother) Miss Mancini. She was named Melrose Place and she gave me one of my most exciting days at the races on Oaks Day at Flemington in 2013, winning the aptly-named Gucci Stakes.
She is now retired to the beautiful Widden Stud and is in foal to another horse Danny trained, the Cox Plate winner Shamus Award.
