Spring Racing Carnival is upon us, which means license for you to attend as many races as your horse race-loving heart can desire. In theory, anyway — the truth is, there are going to be a lot of races. This means you’ll have to be judicious in choosing which ones to go to. After all, outfits take a lot of time (and money!) to coordinate. Quality over quantity, eh? Here are the 12 major Spring Racing Carnival Dates 2017 that you shouldn’t miss.

Memsie Stakes Day

What: A Group 1 race, the Memsie Stakes are often an indicator of how well a horse is doing after its winter break. It’s often a preparation for the bigger races, such as Cox Plate, Caulfield Cup, and Melbourne Cup.

Where: Melbourne Racing Club, Caulfield Racecourse

Sofitel Girls’ Day Out

When: Saturday 16 September 2017

Where: Victoria Racing Club, Flemington

Why: Headlined by the Group 1 Makybe Diva Stakes, this event is the first of the six days of the Melbourne Spring Carnival. Quite a few spring racing carnival stars have emerged from this event over the years.

Underwood Stakes Day

What: A lot of eyes are also trained on this event, which includes the Group 1 Underwood Stakes worth $400,000. An important lead-up to the bigger events, some horses that have won here have become Australian legends.

Where: Melbourne Racing Club, Caulfield Racecourse

AJ Moir Stakes Night

What: The only Group 1 horse race in Australia to be run at night, this is quite the experience! There’s no need to worry about sunblock, and you get the chance to sport your evening looks.

Where: Moonee Valley Racing Club, Moonee Valley Racecourse

Turnbull Stakes Day

What: A Group 1 thoroughbred race, this is one of the major preparatory races for the Caulfield Cup, Cox Plate, and Melbourne Cup.

Where: Victoria Racing Club, Flemington

Caulfield Guineas Day

What: Here’s when you start feeling the spring racing carnival dates heating up. Also known simply as Guineas Day, this is the opener to the three-day Caulfield Cup Carnival, and is widely regarded as one of the world’s best quality Group 1 race days.

Where: Melbourne Racing Club, Caulfield Racecourse

BMW Caulfield Cup Day

What: This is one of Australia’s richest thoroughbred horse races, with prize money worth $3,000,000. A win at this event may qualify a horse for the Melbourne Cup.

Where: Melbourne Racing Club, Caulfield Racecourse

W.S. Cox Plate

What: This is Australia’s most prestigious Weight-for-Age horse race. This Group 1 event has stake money worth $3,000,000.

Where: Moonee Valley Racing Club, Moonee Valley Racecourse

Victoria Derby Day

What: This event features four Group 1 races. The highlight is the AAMI Victoria Derby, which has prize money of $1,500,000 and a trophy worth $10,000. The fashion theme for the day is black and white.

Emirates Melbourne Cup

What: The race that stops a nation, and Australia’s most famous Tuesday. If you can only attend one race this year, make sure this is it — work even stops early to let everyone have fun at the races. Needless to say, this is one of Australia’s most prestigious and richest thoroughbred races, with prize money worth $6,200,000 and trophies valued at $175,000.

Kennedy Oaks Day

What: One of the most special days of all the spring racing carnival dates. Also known as “ladies’ day,” this event marks the culmination of MYER’s Fashions on the Field. The country’s best milliners are also given special recognition on this day.

Let’s not forget the races — the $1,000,000 Group 1 Kennedy Oaks is the highlight.

When: Thursday 9 November 2017

Where: Victoria Racing Club, Flemington

Emirates Stakes Day

What: This event also goes by “Stakes Day,” and is also considered the Family Day of the Melbourne Spring Racing Carnival. The young ones get their turn at the style stakes with Emirates’ Kids Fashions on the Field. The highlight of the day is the Emirates Stakes, which offers prize money of $2,000,000.
