The Australian Turf Club knows how to run competitions in style. This year, the Royal Randwick Fashions on the Field is giving away their richest prize yet: a BMW 220i Convertible valued at $64,000! Oh, and a prize pool of over $75,000. Looks like dressing well really does pay off.
I’m hard-pressed to come up with a more appropriate car. The BMW 220i Convertible is “inspired by summer:” imagine driving along the coast with the top down, the wind in your hair, and you in a beautiful sundress and giant sunnies. There are few things more glamorous.
The prize isn’t the only new thing at Royal Randwick, because this year’s Fashions on the Field is also incorporating digital elements with the traditional ones. Contestants will have their photos professionally taken by renowned fashion photographer Sonny Vandevelde at The Fashion Chute, styled by legendary creative director Tony Assness. GIFs (looped moving images) will be created out of the photos and shared on social media.
Finalists will then be selected, and they will parade their outfits directly in front of the main grandstand. Live judging will include a panel composed of Sonny Vandevelde and race day ambassadors Georgia Fowler and Natalie Roser.
ATC’s Chief Operating Officer Tony Partridge hopes that the move will make the beloved tradition more “relevant to the digital age” and entice a bigger number of competitors.

On the other hand, there’s been a lot of dismay over similar decisions with other racing clubs choosing to forego the traditional catwalk and instead utilising a digital format.
